The Second Pre-Chapter Meeting at Kalunga

In perspective of the XVII Provincial Chapter of the Province of Bangalore, the Province had its second pre-chapter meeting at Kalunga from 13th to 15th of November 2018. There were 20 confreres who had actively participated in the gathering. It was held in the newly renovated Kalunga community building and the atmosphere was very homely and pleasant.

The confreres were divided into four groups with a moderator and a secretary with the objective to report their discussions from the group sharing. The Pre-Chapter meeting started with the Eucharist celebrated by Fr. Arulanandam, the Provincial. The first session was the report of the Province given by Fr. Provincial. The groups discussed the Provincial report and looked for clarifications. In the second session, Fr. Assisi Saldanha talked extravagantly on the restructuring for mission and Communicanda I. After that, Fr. Edward Joseph gave a detail introduction of the Conference Apostolic plan. The day concluded with the evening prayer and Gaudeamus.

On the second day, the main session of the day was given by Fr. Arulanandam who set out the context of India and the numerous difficulties that defy us as a country, as a Christian minority and the adequate and appropriate responses of the church and the province to these issues. The second session was presented by Fr. Edward. He presented about the Vision, Mission, Apostolic needs and core values of the Bangalore province. He requested the confreres to re-look into the priorities and sought for needed modification. This was followed by the group discussion, presentation, and plenary session.

On the final day, the first session of the day was conducted by Fr. John Mathew. He displayed the postulata that were received for the upcoming provincial chapter and requested the responses of the groups with the objective of presenting the pre-chapter responses to the Chapter. In the second session, Fr. Edward Joseph presented the evaluation of the sector report. The concluding remarks were made by Fr. Arulanandam. These were the days of grace for reflection, discussion and sharing.

Meeting of the General Secretariat of Formation in Rome

Body:

(Rome) The General Secretariat of Formation met from Monday, November 19th until Friday, November 23rd, 2018 in Rome.  The members of the Secretariat are as follows, Fr. Alberto Eseverri, C.Ss.R. (Vicar General and president of the Secretariat), Fr. Rogério Gomes, C.Ss.R. (General Consultor), Fr. Manuel Rodríguez, C.Ss.R. (Secretary General of the Secretariat), Fr. Hypius Václav, C.Ss.R. (Conference of Europe), Fr. Edilberto Cepe, C.Ss.R. (Conference of Asia/Oceania), Fr. Joseph Musendami, C.Ss.R. (Conference of Africa/Madagascar), Bro. Larry Luján, C.Ss.R. (Conference of North America).

The agenda for this meeting was quite ambitious as we projected into the future dialoguing about the courses and encounters with formators and students, the updating of the General Ratio Formationis Generalis, the Fundamental elements of Redemptorist Formation Programs at all levels, the Evaluation of the Congregation’s formation programs as dictated by decision # 30 of the XXV General Chapter and the publication of articles and volumes of “Tools for Formators” that can help the formators in their tasks.

The General Secretariat of Formation, as every dependency of the General Government, has been faithful to its mission during this sexennium of pro-actively moving forward with the demands of the renewed Apostolic Priorities of the Conferences and the multiple dynamics involved in the Restructuring and Reconfiguration of our units.

The Secretariat was fortunate to have two sessions with Father General, Michael Brehl, who spoke to us about the last Synod for Youth to which he was an active participant.  We also had an intervention by Fr. Cristian Bueno, the executive secretary of the Secretariat for Evangelization, who spoke to us about the plans and projections of the Commission for Youth, which is part of his Secretariat.  The General Secretariat of Formation believes in the importance of mutual collaboration between the different areas and offices of the Congregation, especially, besides the areas just mentioned, the Office of Communications and the Center for Spirituality.

WORLD DAY OF THE POOR

Sunday XXXIII of ordinary time

November 18, 2018

This Sunday, XXXIII of ordinary time and with the explicit wish of Pope Francis, the Church celebrates the Second World Day of the Poor. This day, quoting the words of Psalm 34: “this poor man cried to the Lord and listened to him”, Pope has given a special message. World day of poor gives us an opportunity to raise awareness, at the level of the Congregation and of communities where we carry out our pastoral work, on the reality of the poor around us. Moreover, it is an opportunity to celebrate in advance the solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe, who identified himself with the little ones and the poor and who, in the end, will judge us with our works of mercy.

The constitution no. 1 shows us that the meeting with the poor constitutes the core that allows us to understand our discipleship as Christians and our identity as Redemptorists. Some have said that more than the recipients of our pastoral work, the poor are a theological place and a meeting place with the Redeemer. Well, we know the impact that the meeting of St. Alphonsus had with the bandits and poor of Scala. Antonio María Tannoia – his first biographer – tells us that, after leaving Scala, Alphonsus left some of his heart with the shepherds and the thieves and cried thinking about how to help them. It was compassion for them that led St. Alphonsus to found the Congregation and the one who determined his moral doctrine, his preaching, his writings and his whole life.

The intention of the Holy Father for this day is to bring us to similar experiences and help us find those with whom Jesus identifies himself: the poor (Mt 25, 31-46), because they, “before being a problem, are a  resource to receive and live the essence of the Gospel “(Day of the Poor 2017). Events like these link us to the evangelical option for the poor, which is not exclusive but preferential, and which is not different from the option of Christ the Redeemer. In his message for the day 2018, Pope Francis affirms that “it intends to be a small response that the whole Church, spread all over the world, directs the poor of all kinds and from every place so that they do not think that their cry has been lost in the void. It is probably like a drop of water in the desert of poverty. “

This is why, on this Sunday, as we celebrate the Eucharist, we might ask ourselves: what is the relationship between the Eucharist and the commitment to social justice? What do the consecratory words “do this in memory of me” mean in the context of a world wounded by inequalities? How do I read and interpret the proclamation of blessedness to the poor, to whom the Kingdom of God belongs? (See Lk 6, 20). How can the Redemptorist charism be expressed today in the light of the guidance of Pope Francis and the context of today’s world? These and other questions could help us to live better, personally and collectively, the spirit of this day. Those who occupy a special place in the apostolic priorities of the Redemptorists are also the protagonists of this Day and allow us to advance in our conversion process to continue proclaiming Christ’s abundant Redemption in a wounded world.

In her song of the Magnificat, Mary,  proclaims the greatness of God that fills the poor and oppressed with hope. May her praise also be ours and that his perpetual help will continue to inspire our mission.

‘Studia Moralia’ Supplement no. 8 is published

Body:

(Rome, Italy) With the pontificate of Pope Francis, the theme  “discernment” was propelled from the beginnings and the Alphonsian Academy wanted to explore its vast perspectives during a Convention held in the Great Hall (Aula Magna)  of the Higher Institute of Specialization on the 14th and March 15, 2018. To develop the theme – “Discernment: Fundamentals and places of exercise “,  several speakers were present, both professors of the Academy,  and experts from outside making the event an opportunity for a happy collaboration between Pontifical Universities and Faculties as well as other ecclesial realities.

A theology that does not stop at speculation but really listens is a theology that serves with concern the needs of the Church today. This is the perspective that has guided the two days of the Conference animated by the awareness that the Church – as Pope Francis affirms – needs to grow in the art of discernment.

The volume, edited by prof. Antonio Donato and Jules Mimeault, collects the contributions of prof. Paolo Asolan (Pastoral Institute “Redemptor Hominis” Pontifical Lateran University); Martín Carbajo Núñez (Alphonsian Academy); Elisabetta Casadei (Alphonsian Academy); Alberto de Mingo Kaminouchi (Alphonsian Academy); Antonio Donato (Alphonsian Academy); Maurizio Faggioni (Alphonsian Academy); Cristiana Freni (Alphonsian Academy); Michele Lavra (Jesuit priest, expert in the accompaniment of Ignatian spiritual exercises); Francesco Maceri (Pontifical Theological Faculty of Sardinia); Sabatino Majorano (Alphonsian Academy); Pietro Marini (Orientation Service for Young Friars Minor of Umbria and Sardinia); Martin McKeever (Alphonsian Academy); Chiara Palazzini (Pastoral Institute “Redemptor Hominis” Pontifical Lateran University); Fabrizio Pieri (Institute of Spirituality of the Pontifical Gregorian University)

Meeting of the General Commission of the Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry

Body:

(Rome, Italy) A few days after the conclusion of the Synod of Bishops dedicated to young people, the General Commission of the Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry met in Rome.

The meeting was held from November 6 to 9, at the Generalate of the Redemptorists in Rome, five confreres representing five continents: Europe (Paolo Drobot), Africa and Madagascar (Christian Klú), North America (Matthew Allman, Santo Arrigo), South and Central America (Fabio Pascual), Asia and Oceania (Peter Balaswamy). Together with the members of the General Government, they tried to find a way to continue the indicated path of the synod. Fr General Michael Brehl, one of the Synod Fathers, showed us the direction at the beginning of our meeting: to listen to young people to learn about their lives, to interpret their lives with the Word of God, to invite young people to make the decision to follow Christ. All three steps are necessary for the journey of growth in faith and of vocational discernment.

The commission decided to update the “General Guidelines for Youth Ministry and Redemptorist Vocation” in the light of the indications of the Synod and of the XXV General Chapter. Recent General Chapter indicated us the signs of the time, that is the “wounded world”. The Redemptorists are convinced that it is necessary to go out to the young to accompany them in their search for the meaning of the life and vocation.

The commission also affirmed that effective youth ministry is possible only from the perspective of working together with the young people and not only for young people.

The next stage of the commission’s work will therefore be an experience of a common project together with the young, that is, the Alphonsian World Youth Day which will take place in Panama City during the World Youth Day in January 2019.
