Ordination to Diaconate at Mt. St. Alphonsus, Bangalore

Body:

On 3rd November 2018, six Redemptorist Seminarians (Bro. Anantharaj, Bro. Deepak Bage, Bro. Thambi Joseph of the Province of Bangalore and Bro. Noel, Bro. Juvance and Bro. Agnelo of Vice-Province of Majella) were ordained as Deacons at Mt. St. Alphonsus, Bangalore. It was indeed a joyful occasion for the Province of Bangalore and the Vice-Province of Majella as these six Confreres accepted to embark on God’s mission here on earth. The Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Most Rev. Peter Machado, the Archbishop of Bangalore and was concelebrated by many Redemptorist priests. Fr. Arulanandam, the Provincial Superior of the Province of Bangalore and Fr. Ivel Mendanha, the Vice-Provincial Superior of the Vice-Province of Majella were also present.

After the Gospel was proclaimed, the rite of ordination to Diaconate began. Fr. Xavier Sanjivi (Rector of Mt. St. Alphonsus Community) presented the 6 candidates to the Archbishop and recommended them to be ordained as Deacons after which the Archbishop preached a fitting homily on the duties of being a Deacon.

After the homily, the candidates committed themselves to celibacy, promised their obedience and declared their intention to undertake the office of Deacon. It was followed by the litany of saints. The Archbishop then laid his hands on each candidate in silence and then recited the prayer of consecration through which they were ordained as deacons. The six newly ordained deacons were then vested with a stole and dalmatic and were presented with the Book of the Gospels. The Archbishop then gave the deacons the kiss of peace. The liturgy then proceeded as usual. After the Eucharist, the 6 newly ordained deacons were felicitated at Mt. St. Alphonsus Refectory which was followed by agape.

We thank Almighty God for these six new deacons and pray that our Redeemer may help them to be faithful to what they have received and serve God by reaching out to the poor and the abandoned

World Mission Sunday

Prot. No. 0000 185/2018

WITNESSES OF THE REDEEMER:

In Solidarity for Mission to a Wounded World

Dear Confreres, Sisters, Youth, Lay Associates, and Young People,

On Sunday, November 11th, we will celebrate the annual World Day of Prayer for the Redemptorist Missionary Vocation. In this celebration, we will remember our Foundation Day (November 9th), and give thanks for the 286 years of witness to the Redeemer lived by generations of Redemptorist missionaries across the world.

As I write to you today from the Synod of Bishops on Youth, I am reminded that our missionary vocation is at the heart of the Church’s mission. And this Synod reminds us that at the heart of the Church’s mission are young people, and most especially those who are wounded or marginalized, migrants or lost. Today we are called in a very special way to be prophetic and authentic witnesses to the Redeemer as we accompany many young women and men in the discernment of their vocation as missionary-disciples.

The Synod has reminded us of the wounds experienced by so many young people and families in the world today. Across the world, the large majority of migrants are young people. Many are driven from their homes by war, by poverty, by religious persecution. Others migrate from rural areas to urban centres seeking education, employment, a chance to improve their life. A great number of young women and children are the victims of human trafficking. Still, other young people are searching for meaning, for acceptance, for purpose.

Speaking recently of this reality, Pope Francis encourages us “not to be afraid of descending into the hell of the people… Suffering, be it human, social, that of conscience… we need to be there. Touch the wounds. And touching people’s wounds, you touch the wounds of Christ. [We] should never be afraid of this. It is a grace we receive from the hand of the Lord.”

As we prepare for this World Day of Prayer for the Redemptorist Missionary Vocation, we remember the Synod process initiated by the Holy Father and in which so many of us have taken part. The Synod Assembly which concludes on October 28 is not the end of the process. Pope Francis has invited us to continue to walk with young people as we prepare for the World Youth Day in Panama, and then to continue the Post-Synodal implementation phase in every continent, country and diocese. We walk together with our younger sisters and brothers in a process of discernment and commitment.

At the same time, we cherish and celebrate the growing number of lay men and women that God is calling to share our missionary vocation as Lay Missionaries and Associates. And we are grateful for the generous response of so many younger confreres and candidates in the process of Initial Formation.

Remembering the widow in the Gospel passage for Sunday, November 11, we gratefully celebrate those who from their poverty, “have given everything they had to live on”. The lives of our senior confreres who have persevered in their vocation with joy and hope are an authentic and prophetic Witness to the Redeemer who calls us in solidarity to touch his wounds today.

In this Spirit, I ask every Redemptorist community to celebrate this World Day of Prayer in every one of our churches. In past years, some have dedicated a particular petition in the prayers of the faithful, others have planned an hour of Eucharistic Adoration. Some have used the occasion to promote our missionary vocation with displays of information about the Redemptorists. And others have taken up the collection for the Redemptorist Solidarity Fund, most of which is used for the initial formation of Redemptorist missionaries, especially in developing nations. I urge you to be creative and thoughtful, and perhaps this year it would be a good idea to ask for ideas and involve groups of young people in the planning.

May we follow “Christ the Redeemer with hearts full of joy” (Cons. 20), confident that we are “sent as helpers, companions and ministers of Jesus Christ in the great work of redemption” (Cons. 2). May Mary, our Mother of Perpetual Help, accompany us always. May St. Alphonsus, and all our saints, blessed and martyrs inspire us and help us by their prayers.

Your brother in Christ our Redeemer,

Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R.,

Superior General

Pre-Chapter Meeting of the Province at Bangalore

Body:

In view of the XVII Provincial Chapter of the Province of Bangalore, the Province had its first pre-chapter meeting at Bangalore from 29th to 31st October 2018. Pre-Chapter meetings will be held in two other places in the country, i.e., Kalunga and Trivandrum in November.

The confreres were divided into groups with a moderator and a secretary in order to report their deliberations from the group sharing. The groups took turns to lead the morning and the evening prayer and the Eucharistic celebration. The Pre-Chapter meeting began with the Eucharist celebrated by the Provincial, Fr. Arulanandam. He stressed on reconciling love, compassion with the law. We are to learn from Jesus who valued love and compassion more than the mere external observance of the law. The first session was the report of the Province given by Fr. Provincial. The groups discussed the Provincial report and sought clarifications. In the second session, Fr. Assisi Saldanha spoke elaborately on the restructuring for mission and Communicanda I. Later in the evening Fr. Edward Joseph gave a detail presentation of the Conference Apostolic plan and laid down the task that is expected from the Province.

On the second day Fr. Gino Henriques during the Eucharist gave a homily on being witnesses of the Redeemer and stressed specifically on being a witness. The first session of the day was given by Fr. Arulananadam who laid down the context of India and the many challenges that confront us as a nation, as a Christian minority and to read the signs of the times. The confreres went into the groups to further discuss and share and report to the larger group. After the secretaries of the groups shared and the floor was open for the plenary session. The second session was dealt by Fr. Edward who revisited the Vision, Mission, Apostolic priorities and core values which the Province had previously worked out after the General Visitation in 2013. The confreres were asked to revise and relook at the Vision, Mission, Apostolic priorities and core values in light of the Conference Apostolic plan and Communicanda I. This was done in groups and the secretaries gave their reports of the discussion.

On the third day, the Eucharist was celebrated by Fr. Juventius Andrade. He reminded us of the connection between the Redeemer and the closeness to the people. During the first session of the day Fr. John Mathew, on behalf of the preparatory commission, presented the postulata and asked for the responses of the groups in order to be presented to the Chapter as a collective response from the Pre-Chapter meeting at Bangalore. In the second session, Fr. Edward Joseph presented a report on the evaluation of the ‘sector,’ which the XVI Provincial Chapter asked for an evaluation of the ‘sector’ so that it can be presented in the XVII Provincial Chapter.

There are a lot of things for us to be grateful for the Pre-Chapter meeting in Bangalore. It was days of grace for reflection, deliberation and an opportunity for the confreres to learn from one another. The Preparatory Commission, the Provincial Government together with the moderators, secretaries of the groups, notaries and the community and staff at Nava Spoorthi Kendra (where the Pre-Chapter meeting was held) all worked together and put in a lot of efforts for the fruitful completion of the meeting. The meeting was brought to conclusion with the singing of Salve Regina.

Youth animation programme at Fatima Church, Calcutta

Body:

Fatima Church in Calcutta which is under the care of the Redemptorists of the Bangalore Province in India celebrated Youth Day on Sunday, 28th October 2018. Youth Day programme was organized by the Redemptorist Fathers of Calcutta Community in collaboration with some laity of the parish. Frs. Amar Bagh C.Ss.R and Francis Mukul Mondal C.Ss.R took the active role to animate 67 youth of the parish. The programme commenced at 9.00 a.m. with Holy Eucharist presided over by Fr. Dominic Gomes, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Calcutta.

Fr. Francis Mukul Mondal C.Ss.R the parish priest of Fatima Church pointed out that when the world is moving in the direction of profit-making, creating new technology, etc. unethically, without developing human qualities, we are called to show the direction to the world. “Where technology, politics and corporate have failed, the Church invites you and me to do by sowing the seeds of love and mercy. A world which is immorally thriving without any conscience in the space-less world, misleading the young people and the vulnerable, looks up to you for new direction where everyone can enjoy dignity and equality”, Said Fr. Mukul.  “Let no man look down on your youthfulness but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity show yourself an example to those who believe.”  Pope Francis tells us “not to be afraid of Christ and his Church.  For there we find the treasure that fills life with joy.” We are called to live out joyfully our responsibility for the world.

Fr. Amar Bagh C.Ss.R highlighted in his talk about vocation. He spoke about the life of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori and his response to God’s call. Though he came from a rich family he became poor for the sake of Christ the Redeemer.

The other resource persons addressed relevant issues of career motivation and selection, and the challenges faced by our youth in today’s ever demanding world. Mr Christopher Godfrey spoke about different types of addiction and how they are affected in our lives, families and societies. Dr Mary D’Cruz dealt with depression, Mr Dominic Gomes dealt with career motivation and Mr Pramod Fernandes spoke about vocation in general.

The programme ended with dance and singing competitions based on Gospel songs and the theme “We are the Light of the World.”

Letter from the Superior General

With a letter published in this second issue of 2018 of Spicilegium Historicum, the Superior General, Fr. Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R. invites us to share the joy of the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Redemptorist Historical Institute.

“Still alive, St. Alphonsus instructed some of his confreres to gather historical information on the life and work of some confreres who died in the name of holiness. In every way he encouraged and supported the research and study of history “, writes the superior general, not a reason for this important anniversary.

“Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Historical Institute entails for all of us, in this phase of restructuring and renewal that we are living, to dwell on two points: history is the teacher of life: no Redemptorist can do without the knowledge of our past; the invitation of Pope Francis: to look at the past with gratitude, to live the present with passion, and to embrace the future with hope (Apostolic Letter to the Consecrated, 2014).

An important date for the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer that must consider history as the starting point of a long journey, in which the Holy Spirit has inspired ways and forms of actualization of a missionary charism at the service of the Church and of humanity.

Then we find the following articles:

El Instituto Histórico de la Congregación of the Santísimo Redentor, 70aniversario de su fundación, 1948-2018, CORDOBA CHAVEZ Alvaro, C.SS.R.

A review of moments in the genesis of the appearance of the Redemptorist Historical Institute, since 1948 when Leonardo Buijs, at that time superior general, had sensed that knowing more about the historical roots of the Congregation had to serve to build an identity in the mission of the sons of St. Alphonsus.  A historical step for the Redemptorists because, as the article well informs, the awareness of the importance among the institutions grows with the creation of: Historical Institute (1948), Alphonsian Academy (1949),  Spicilegium Historicum CSSR (1953) and Library of CSSR History.

WEISS Otto, Das Generalvikariat des Pater Joseph Amand Passerat (1772 – 1858)

An interesting presentation of the work done by the Venerable Servant of God Fr. Joseph-Amand Passerat, 1772-1858, France, as the Transalpine General Vicariate. From the moment of his ordination (April 15, 1797) he was in charge of the formation of the numerous candidates attracted by the Congregation. He earned the esteem of St. Clement, who described him as “a man of holiness and of high virtues”. After the death of St. Clement, in 1820, Father Passerat was appointed to succeed him as Vicar General over the Alps with residence in the new house of Maria am Gestade in Vienna. After long years of frustration, the Redemptorists under his guidance entered a period of expansion, with their eyes turned away to the United States. Due to the Austrian revolution in 1848 he was forced to leave Vienna and find refuge in Belgium.

A precise historical reflection of the relationship with Rudolf von Smetana, who as a consultant of Father Passerat managed to organize the Congregation.

PIKH Ruslan C.SS.R., “Whom did Belgium send us?” Father Joseph Schrijvers’Life until 1913

A brief biography of Father Joseph Schrijvers, underlining the religious character of his life. A contribution to the history of the Congregation recalling that Belgium has given to the history of the Congregation great figures in the field of the formation. Reading these lines means being part of the enthusiasm of some Redemptorists involved in the formation of the young generations of missionaries, even when the social and political situation does not help at all. “Belgium has given us a great man, with great spirituality”, concludes Pikh.

TORTORA Alfonso, From the art to the Alphonsian spirituality.

The curious relationship between “time” and holiness in the asceticism of Alphonsus de Liguori. The author prefers to invest a few pages to involve the reader in the concept of time and how they thought about it in the time of St. Alphonsus. To describe the idea about time in St. Alphonsus, one must remember the thematic set from which they generated the essential aspects of a new vision of time, which tended to bind itself to a modern European society.

BRESCIANI, Ernesto, C.SS.R., Chronicle of the miracles and graces granted to his devotees by Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

A list of as many as 54 wonderful works that are described after a premise on the religious environment that surrounds our current society. “The current eclipse and crisis of faith that crosses the contemporary mentality has not diminished the interest or curiosity towards” the miracle “… begins by writing Bresciani. “Miracle is a fact that is implemented above the laws of nature. It can not be done by man because it goes beyond his possibilities, but only from God “, says the author.

MAJORANO Sabatino, C.SS.R., Mary: the merciful gaze that welcomes and makes new.

A profound theological commentary on the theme of God’s mercy presented to readers by the reflection of the Mariology of St. Alphonsus. A new perspective in a brief treatise on the merciful gaze of Mary. “This is not just a coincidence of time. Between Alphonsus’s Mariology, his proposal for Christian life and his missionary project, there is a close link: they clarify and support each other, having in the mercy (copiosa redemptio) the fundamental nucleus and the essential key to reading.

MYKHAYLIUK Nazariya, OSB, The original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and its copies in the monasteries of the Order of Saint Basil the Great in Ukraine.

A nice article on the artistic analysis of the styles, iconographies and colours of the already famous Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Without wasting time on detailing the story, the author centres the study in the region of Ukraine. Collects many contributions and signals other icons that were at that time inviting to see and consider what it means to be in front of the icon.
