Annual Retreat 2019 - Province of Bangalore

Body:

GO INTO THE DEEP - (Bangalore, India). The Annual Retreat for the Province of Bangalore (first among the two for this year) took place at MAITREYA, a centre for Eco-Spirituality which is run by the Sisters of the Holy Cross of Kottayam, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore. The 39 Retreatants belonging to different communities from all over India had a wonderful time of being closer to God from 7th to 12th July.

The Retreat was preached by Rev. Fr. K. M. Joseph (a Jesuit from Jamshedpur Province). In his talks he reflected with us the aspects of our life as followers of Jesus the Redeemer in detail which were of great help for us to live our life as true missionaries according to the way and spirit of St. Alphonsus. In every aspect, the participation of the Confreres was something great and admirable, which in fact helped us to grow in closeness to God as a community of Redemptorists and made the Retreat a grand success. Overall the Retreat helped us to go into the depths of innermost beings as per the theme - 'Go into the Deep'.

Three students (Joshy and Arun from the Bangalore Province and Sebastian from the Majella V. Province) made their First Profession on the 13th June 2019 at Mt. St. Joseph, Kotagiri in the Nilgiris in India. This was a historic occasion. It was the first time three major superiors in India (Bangalore, Liguori, and Majella) attended and celebrated at the First Profession Service. The moment was also historic as it was the end of the Joint Novitiate for Bangalore and Majella with the Profession of the three novices and at the same time the beginning of the Common Novitiate for Bangalore, Liguori, and Majella. A MOU for the same Common Novitiate was signed on the 9th May 2019 in the presence of Fr. General and Fr. Jovencio Ma the Conference Co-coordinator.

Inauguration of the Pastoral Year at Mt. St. Alphonsus Bangalore

Body:

(Bangalore, India) The 3rd June 2019 marked the Inauguration of the Pastoral Year (Transition to Ministry) for the Province of Bangalore and the V. Province of Majella. This important stage of formation for 10 months is a well-planned course to enable the young Redemptorist Missionary Priests to make the transition to Ministry.

The Pastoral Year was inaugurated with mass presided over by Fr. Joseph Ivel Mendanha, C.Ss.R. (V. Provincial of Majella). Fr. Edward Raju, C.Ss.R. (Provincial of Bangalore) was present and addressed the group.

There are 6 Redemptorist Newly Ordained Priests (3 from Bangalore: Deepak, Ananthraj, and Thambi; 3 from Majella: Noel, Juvance and Agnelo). The Pastoral year is led by Fr Xavier Sanjivi, C.Ss.R. of the Bangalore Province assisted by Fr Juventius Andrade, C.Ss.R. and team.

Fr. Ivel preached on the importance of shedding the Priestly glamour which distracts from ministry and being closer to people especially the abandoned who are wounded and for him we proclaim the Gospel. He urged the young missionaries to follow St. Paul in being persuasive in proclaiming the Gospel and take heart from Jesus who is our comfort in troubled times.

Fr. Edward reminded the group that the General Chapter has called us all to avoid clericalism and embrace our Redemptorist calling as Religious and so we shun the clerical attitude by serving always rather than being served. He called on the young Redemptorist missionaries to grab every opportunity given to be proficient in different types of ministry esp. Migrant Ministry for Majella and Ministry to Families in Distress for Bangalore so that the wounded would profit from our apostolic labours.

The Pastoral Year will begin at Mt. St. Alphonsus in Bangalore for the first couple of months and then move to St. Gerard’s in Bangalore. The Young missionaries will be trained in Homiletics, Parish Mission preaching, Retreat preaching, Parish ministry, Youth Ministry, Financial and administrative skills, Migrant Ministry with immersion experience and other forms of missionary activity.

The Pastoral Year will end with Easter 2020 in a formal commissioning ceremony.

8 Steps to Being a Redemptorist Missionary

Body:

Choosing a path, discerning our vocation is not always easy. Many challenges may present themselves and it is often difficult to be clear about the steps to take until, effectively, “getting there”. For those who choose the religious life is no different. Get to know the vocational and formative journey of the Redemptorist Missionaries in eight steps:

1- Feeling the call of God for the religious life

The understanding of the vocation happens through personal growth and maturation as a Christian. This is done through constant prayer, participation in the community and the Eucharist. These three pillars are the basis for the young person to respond consciously to the call of God.

2- To know about the various charisms of the Church

The Catholic Church is rich in gifts and charisms. Many congregations, institutes, and communities are scattered throughout Brazil and the world, each with a different history and mission. It is important for the young person to search for these religious families and to know those that arouse their interest according to the areas of activity. Discerning is knowing!

3- Making contact with the Redemptorist Vocation Ministry

When realizing that the Redemptorist Religious Life can be his way, it is necessary to make contact with the Vocation Ministry to begin the vocational accompaniment. In this first contact, you are asked for some basic information such as age, place of residence and schooling. With these data in hand, the Redemptorist Congregation sends the young person to the nearest Redemptorist unit.

4- Start the vocational accompaniment

After analyzing the data, the candidate is invited to initiate the vocational accompaniment. This is a great opportunity for the vocation to know better the charism and the mission of the Redemptorist Congregation. Usually this process lasts approximately one year and is done through internet training and participation in vocational meetings.

5- Participate in vocational meetings

The meetings are fundamental for the continuity of the discernment process. These are unique moments in which young people have the chance to live with Redemptorist Missionaries for a few days, sharing experiences and getting to know more closely the routine of a formation house. It is important to remember that no one joins the Redemptorist Congregation without having participated in vocation meetings.

6- Joining the Redemptorist formation

After the accompaniment, being considered fit to experience the formative experience, the candidate is welcomed in a house of formation. The long-awaited moment of entering the seminary has arrived. Vocational discernment continues throughout the formative process, which lasts an average of 10 years.

7- To assume the Redemptorist mission as a goal of life

Every new day is a new opportunity to learn more about the community life and about the Redemptorist Mission. This is the purpose of the formative journey, which assists in the confirmation of the Redemptorist Vocation.

8- Profess the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and perseverance

Having experienced all the stages of the formative process, the young person consecrates himself through the evangelical vows as a Redemptorist Missionary. In this way, some opt for the priestly life and others for being Redemptorist Brothers. All share the same charism and spirituality. The difference between these two options is the ministerial question, the service – Sacrament of the Order – which receives the priesthood. A Missionary takes the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and the vow of perseverance.
