First Profession of twelve brothers of Inter-Provincial Novitiate in India

Body:

We thank God for the gift of twelve novices who made their profession on the feast of Pentecost on 31st of May 2020, at Mt. St. Joseph in Kotagiri, Southern India.

This year the first profession was extraordinary because this is the first group of novices made their profession after establishing the Common Novitiate between the three units (Province of Bangalore, Province of Ligouri, and Vice-Province of Majella) last year on 9th May 2019. It became a reality in formation in this part of the world as we go through the process of restructuring of units for the mission.

Among the twelve novices, the Vice-Province of Majella is so blessed to have five more new members – Ajay Arun Fernandes, Calroy Alvares, Jaison Fernandes, Richard Rodriques, Jackson Souz.

From the Ligouri Province, the four novices, Tony Kiriyathan, Alan Padayatty, Jaimon Xavier, Jose Prakash who were privileged have their novitiate experience outside their unit together in collaboration with the other two units. It is also a blessing for the novices of the other two units to establish a deep bond of fraternal relationships at this initial stage of formation. I personally feel that this fraternal friendship that is established at the novitiate level will strengthen their understanding during the theological studies for all three units.

We had three novices Prabin Ekka, Oliverpaul Kharabani, and Roshan Tete who were professed from the Province of Bangalore. We are delighted to have Oliverpaul Kharabani the first vocation to be professed from the North-East. Another candidate from the North-East is coming to the Novitiate this year. This blessing promises us hope of missionary expansion in the North East in the near future.

The lockdown caused by COVID-19 and the guidelines issued by the local administration altered the usual celebration of the first profession at Kotagiri. Travel restrictions imposed by the Government prevented the Major Superiors, confreres, and guests in participating in the Profession celebrations. Fr. Jomio Thomas the Novice Master and Fr. Lester D’Silva the Socius were given the delegation to receive the novices’ vows and accept them as members of the congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

Heartfelt thanks to Fr. Jomio, who accompanied five batches of novices in their discernment and accompaniment and a hearty welcome to Fr. Jaison from the Liguori Province who is appointed as the Novice Master.

Fr. Sahaya Arockiasamy, C.Ss.R.

KINDNESS IN A PANDEMIC

Body:

It is in history’s darkest moments that the human trait of kindness shines the brightest. In an unprecedented global pandemic humanity from every nook and cranny is speaking the global language of kindness.  Everyone is pitching in and contributing, big and small, for the mighty cause of fighting a tiny yet, deadly virus that has descended from an unsuspecting mammal. To single out an individual and crown him as the man of the moment would not be fair. Even so, digging deeper, a soul emerges beyond the vast majority, whose act of kindness in a grave situation, evokes a special mention. One such person was a humble priest, Don Giuseppe Berardelli, who had been serving as the Archpriest of Casnigo in the Diocese of Bergamo in Northern Italy which was hit hard by Covid-19.  He contracted the virus and fell ill. As Berardelli was already suffering from a respiratory condition for a while, his parishioners had purchased a respiratory apparatus exclusively for him.  But with the raising pandemic, breathing apparatus for victims of the virus fell short in number.  Berardelli, despite ill with the virus himself, chose to give his ventilator to someone else, perhaps younger than his 72-years self.  Sadly in doing so, the priest died though someone younger than himself and with more years of life ahead was saved by the ventilator.  Indeed “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends!” were the famous words of Jesus who laid His life for humanity. History repeats itself and heroes emerge to brighten up dark times. In our parish too there were many such heroes who labored hard to spread kindness during COVID 19.

Holy Ghost Church Covid-19 Relief Works:

Holy Ghost Parish together with its SCC leaders and volunteers garnered much resource in extending their help and support to the needy all through the lockdown period of COVID 19.  It is note-worthy that the help rendered in such challenging times were both in cash and kind. The beneficiaries included several families from the economically week strata of society residing in and around and many migrants from Jharkhand. The SCC leaders from Bagalur layout, Lingarajapurm and Venkateshpuram were instrumental in identifying the needy families that were to be reached out.  Essential groceries such as rice, dal, sugar and oil, were then procured, packed and distributed.  Around 3500 of such packets were given to those identified.  These rations were given to all people in need without any discrimination of their religious background.

Many of our parishioners donated generously towards the COVID 19 relief works both in monetary and other non-monetary ways.  They extended their hand in the procurement, packing and distribution of the ration to the needy families.  Despite the fear of the contagion, they came with a charitable spirit and involved themselves wholeheartedly in the relief measures. The Parish Priest, Fr. Anthony Swamy together with his team express their gratitude and appreciation to all the SCC leaders and other volunteers who made the Parish COVID 19 relief works a grand and satisfying venture.  Special thanks to Mrs. Pramila Edwin, for coordinating to purchase food grains, Mrs. Andrea and Mr. Sagay for their efforts in procuring food packets and Mr. Jai Kumar with others for distributing cooked food in different areas of the Parish.

Vocation Reflections by the Redemptorists and the Redemptoristines

Body:

Constitution 20 makes it clear who a REDEMPTORIST MISSIONARY is.

“Strong in faith, rejoicing in hope, burning with charity, on fire with zeal, in humility of heart and persevering in prayer, Redemptorists as apostolic men and genuine disciples of Saint Alphonsus follow Christ the Redeemer with hearts full of joy; denying themselves and always ready to undertake what is demanding, they share in the mystery of Christ and proclaim it in Gospel simplicity of life and language, that they may bring to people plentiful redemption.”

God calls everyone to experience the fullness of life shown to us in and through Jesus Christ. All are called to holiness of life. The vast majority of Catholics are called to the lay vocation. This vocation is not somehow less than either the religious or priestly vocations, for God does not call any of his people to something second rate. The laity, grounded in his or her baptismal call to reveal Jesus Christ to the world. They are called to participate in bringing the whole world to God (Christifideles Laici no.1). He or she does this either as a married person or as a single person, each state of life bringing with it its particular focus and genius.

In his Apostolic Exhortation, Vita Consecrata, St John Paul II named the consecrated man or woman as the icon of the transfigured Christ. In religious imagery, an icon is a depiction of the sacred or divine that represents and participates in the reality that it is depicting. It is a window into the divine. By making this comparison, Pope John Paul reminded us all that those called to this vocation are given to the Church and the world to remind us of the presence of the divine amongst us.

The Irish Redemptorist confreres and the Redemptoristines shared their understanding of vocation with us. We are called to share the beautiful life we have received from God in responding to the service of humanity in the best way possible. We too have a responsibility to work for vocations to carry out the works entrusted to us as envisioned by our founder St. Alphonsus de Liguori. We pray that many young men and women may come forward to witness and share the joy and the love of God to the needy.
