Inauguration of the Pastoral Year at Mt. St. Alphonsus Bangalore

Body:

(Bangalore, India) The 3rd June 2019 marked the Inauguration of the Pastoral Year (Transition to Ministry) for the Province of Bangalore and the V. Province of Majella. This important stage of formation for 10 months is a well-planned course to enable the young Redemptorist Missionary Priests to make the transition to Ministry.

The Pastoral Year was inaugurated with mass presided over by Fr. Joseph Ivel Mendanha, C.Ss.R. (V. Provincial of Majella). Fr. Edward Raju, C.Ss.R. (Provincial of Bangalore) was present and addressed the group.

There are 6 Redemptorist Newly Ordained Priests (3 from Bangalore: Deepak, Ananthraj, and Thambi; 3 from Majella: Noel, Juvance and Agnelo). The Pastoral year is led by Fr Xavier Sanjivi, C.Ss.R. of the Bangalore Province assisted by Fr Juventius Andrade, C.Ss.R. and team.

Fr. Ivel preached on the importance of shedding the Priestly glamour which distracts from ministry and being closer to people especially the abandoned who are wounded and for him we proclaim the Gospel. He urged the young missionaries to follow St. Paul in being persuasive in proclaiming the Gospel and take heart from Jesus who is our comfort in troubled times.

Fr. Edward reminded the group that the General Chapter has called us all to avoid clericalism and embrace our Redemptorist calling as Religious and so we shun the clerical attitude by serving always rather than being served. He called on the young Redemptorist missionaries to grab every opportunity given to be proficient in different types of ministry esp. Migrant Ministry for Majella and Ministry to Families in Distress for Bangalore so that the wounded would profit from our apostolic labours.

The Pastoral Year will begin at Mt. St. Alphonsus in Bangalore for the first couple of months and then move to St. Gerard’s in Bangalore. The Young missionaries will be trained in Homiletics, Parish Mission preaching, Retreat preaching, Parish ministry, Youth Ministry, Financial and administrative skills, Migrant Ministry with immersion experience and other forms of missionary activity.

The Pastoral Year will end with Easter 2020 in a formal commissioning ceremony.

CCC Training Program at Holy Redeemer Parish

Body:

A year ago, the parish clergy, Rev. Fr. Louis Christopher C.Ss.R, the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Peter. B C.Ss.R, the then Co-pastor, Fr. Sandeep Menezes C.ss.R  and a small core team of the Holy Redeemer Parish envisioned a year-long program on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  Many signed up and the program started off after Easter 2018.  Sessions were organized twice a month, after the morning mass for an hour, along with refreshments. Throughout the journey, the sessions were well planned and organized with knowledgeable speakers from all over the country. The speakers gave the participants great insights into the 24 topics that incorporated the program design.

The sessions were enhanced with supplemental activities and videos that helped the participants delve into their learning in a deeper way. Attendance at these sessions was almost always high and the course ended on March 31st, 2019 on a high note with 50 participants graduating. The ceremony included participation in the Eucharist and participants sharing their personal transformation experience. They took a pledge to continue to deepen their knowledge of the Catechism and apply the teachings in their lives as well as make use of opportunities for catechesis and evangelization in their surroundings.

The program was planned by the Redemptorist fathers during the year of faith formation for youth and Laity in the Archdiocese of Bengaluru. The participants who have completed this course will now be actively involved in the faith formation programs for the children, animating the parish youth, animating the liturgy in the parish and conducting the similar programs on request basis in the other parishes of the Archdiocese. We congratulate the parish clergy and parishioners of the Holy Redeemer church, Bengaluru on this meaningful initiative in our Archdiocese.

Book Release Titled - "Combining Moral Truth with Pastoral Compassion"

Body:

On the occasion of the parochial feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help at Holy Ghost Church, Bangalore, during the solemn feast mass at 9.30 AM on 27th January, 2019, the Provincial of the Province of Bangalore Rev. Fr. Edward J. Raju, C.Ss.R released the much awaited book of our revered Moral Theologian of India, Late Rev. Dr. Clement Campos, C.Ss.R., titled “Combining Moral Truth with Pastoral Compassion”- edited by Rev. Dr. Assisi Saldanha, C.Ss.R.  The copies of the book were received by Ms. Bernadette Campos, sister of Fr. Clement Campos and by the Provincial Fr. Edward J. Raju.

About the book

Combining Moral Truths with Pastoral Compassion” is a compilation of pastoral reflections and articles of Rev. Dr. Clement Campos, C.Ss.R., published in leading theological journals of Moral Theology.  The book reflects contemporary trends in Catholic Moral Theology and is the fruit of deep and profound faith in Christ the Redeemer, his years of teaching in different theological institutions in India and abroad and most importantly reflections born from his pastoral care to the most abandoned and poor in India.  The contents herein indicate only a glimmer of his rich comprehensive knowledge of scripture and Moral theology, contextualized and integrated in his years of pastoral care helping many to make choices based on moral truths.  Being faithful to the Church’s moral wisdom the book offers the Church’s position on the many moral issues concerning our daily life in the light of the pastoral compassion emphasised by our founder St. Alphonsus Liguori (patron of Catholic Moralists).  Written in clear, accessible and lay-friendly language, I highly recommend this book to all those seeking Moral truth with pastoral compassion.

The Redemptorists proclaim Redemption to the Slum Women in Bangalore

Body:

Some of the Redemptorist fathers of Mount St. Alphonsus community, Bangalore along with the lay collaborators have started a new initiative for the Slum women in our locality. A survey estimated that the population of the slums in the State is about 40.50 lakhs, which is 22.56% of the State’s urban population. Totally 2397 slums are notified in the State, out of which 387 slums are notified in Bangalore City alone under the Karnataka Slum Area.

The initiative to empower the women emerged when the need was expressed by the slum women to learn and develop a skill. A quick survey was done by the few volunteers who confirmed that the slum women needed tailoring skills in order to empower themselves and their families.

The Redemptorists (Frs. John Mathew, James Kumar, and A.S Raja) with the collaboration of lay people (esp. the couples Kenneth and Akila Lean; Shyla and Matthew) and the support of the local NGO “GRACE” assessed the possibility of starting a tailoring unit for these women living in the slums. Our dream realized faster than we expected when the Sisters of Charles Borromeo were willing to revive their own tailoring unit that they previously had near the slum.

Initially, there were 28 women ready to join the tailoring program. Our first tailoring unit for women began in the Centre ‘Anbillam’ on 9th September 2018. The tailoring unit was blessed and inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Edward CSsR (the vicar of the Bangalore Province) who encouraged the collaborative efforts of the St. Charles sisters and the Redemptorists with the lay collaborators.

The assessment of the students of the tailoring unit was done a month later. The results were really positive. During the meeting, an illiterate woman said that due to financial constraints faced by her family, she was a school dropout at 12 years of age. Soon she was married and gave birth to two children. Her husband was an alcoholic. She was employed as a domestic worker in various homes earning very meager money to support her husband and family.  She said that this tailoring institute has become a new sign of hope in her life as she was empowered with the new skill. It also gave her the confidence to support herself and the family.

Encouraged by the success of the first tailoring unit, we soon began the assessment of a slum in Venkateshpuram, which is located in another section in Bangalore. This same urgent need to learn tailoring skills was evident here too. As we looked for a place, the Satyaseva sisters, who once had a tailoring unit, expressed their willingness to offer the place and some sewing machines.  On 11th November 2018, the second tailoring unit was born in Satya Seva, Venkateshpuram.  There are nearly 40 women who are empowered presently by this unit.

The institute in the locality has inspired many uneducated men and women to become financially independent. It has also chosen some illiterate women to be trained. One such person was Nithyamathi (the name has been changed), who did not go to school and felt useless and hopeless. But after coming to know about the institute, she joined the institute and learnt the trade. Now she is leading a peaceful life and hopes to earn her livelihood by stitching clothes and doing embroidery.

The institute plans to offer a certificate at the end of the tailoring course. Attempts also are made to find employment on completion of the course.  The collaborative efforts of the Redemptorists and the lay collaborators has been named as ‘SEEDS’ (Social, Economic Empowerment & Development Service). The future plan is to extend the tailoring program to the other nearby slums as well.  We hope to empower at least 600 women every year. We also dream that what we have begun recently as little tiny seeds may soon sprout and extend its branches far and wide.
